We decided to explore the phenomenology of wind for a reason of 2 coincidences.
Calgary Transit's lightrail is run by wind energy generated by the Pincher
Creek wind farm, thus avoiding the generation of 26'000 tonnes of CO2 per
year and is the first North American wind powered public transit system.
Secondly, Calgary is known for her +15 system, which is a series of walkways
15' above street level connecting high-rise buildings to keep out the weather
elements = winter cold/wind shut out if possible.
With this dichotomy, we decided to seduce the imagination of Calgary's urban
dwellers by creating a narrative of the movement of the wind through a city
which slips in and out of one's consciousness like exchanged glances between
passing strangers and floating snippets of conversation. The pavilion takes
on the metaphor of a cloud caught in the movement of the wind.
Soft
It is clothed with a white canvas fabric that is bunched up to create wind
pockets that can generate soft sounds with the urban cacophony - Low Technology.
Bright
At night, light and video images projected from the inside of the fabric
surface will glow with the city - A Cloud with Silver Lining.
Light
During the day, traces of filtered sunlight through the fluttering fabric
makes moving patterns on the ground.
